Tottenham Realistic Signings and targets

The only fnished a few weeks ago, but already Tottenham have been linked with what seems like half the players around the world. I am going to go through our realistic targets and ones we should press hard to capture in order to push for a top 4/5 finish this season.

CoupetGregory Coupet – With Cerny moving to QPR and Robinson looking set to move (middlesborough bound I think) I feel if the reports linking us with the French international are true then we should make a move as soon as we can.  His age is of no importance as long as he can still do the job on the pitch; and like David james; he seems to be getting better with age. I feel even if we only get a couple of years from him, he would be a great signing and a proven keeper. If this is not possible then I feel Joe Hart should be our next target, still young and proven in the premier league.

Richard Dunne – Voted Manchester City fans player of the year for the past four years, Dunne is a must. With the latest news being Harry Redknapp confirming interest in the Republic of Ireland star, I feel we should do what we can to beat Portsmouth to his signature. Look at what we can offer compared to Portsmouth.

Play in London for a club on the up with superb fans or play in Portsmouth with 1 good fan and an average attendance of about 14,000, our wages are likely to be bigger and with Rocha set to leave and King and Woodgate known for injuries; surely Dunne will see this is a great oppourunity. I watched Dunne last season and said how i’d love him to join Spurs, and whats more; if all went well it could mean releasing Ledley King into the holding midfield role he did so well 4 years ago.

Along with the hopeful captures of Giovani Dos Santos from Barcalona and Diego Capel from Ramos’ former club Seville which would be two class signings I feel next season could be one to watch… and we’ve all heard that before!!!

My team come August 2008 (Realistic)

Coupet

Hutton   Dunne   Woodgate

King

Lennon  Modric  Dos Santos   Capel

Berbatov   Keane

And then look at the players we would have as backup, Jenas, Malbranque, Bale, Gilberto… We would have such great squad depth.

    Goalkeepers.

Why are Spurs even considering a 35 year old to perform in front of our posts?
We have just employed a goalkeeping coach – use his skills (if any), to resurect
Paul Robinson´s belief in himself. He is an established & talented man who could overcome all his critics.
    Keep the faith Spurs fans.

Well Noel let me explain my opinion.

I too would love to see Robinson back to his best, nobody with a knowledge of football can argue that he hasnt got the talent. It seems ever since that bobble when he missed the ball for England, he has lost his confidence, he seems to thknk twice before going for things and spills balls into danger areas.

I would love for him to be back to his best, if a new coach could come and and do this, then great, we would save money and we would have the true England No.1 back (what people forget is that he actually performed well for the Euro qualifyers. What people also forget is that while in goal for spurs over the past two season, he has had a terrible defence in front of him… if that doesnt get rid of your confidence the nothing will.

BUT the problem lies in Ramos, i feel he has no belief in him, and will be looking to ship him out.

You mention age also, well to be honest look at James for Pompey, with goalkeepers age isnt a bad thing… with age comes maturity and better judgement and decision making.

  3. Thomas Rooney Says:

Richard Dunne would be a great signing for Spurs. King can’t be relyed upon to stay fit and Dunne would be a great partner for Woodgate. Don’t expect Mark Hughes to let him go too easilt though.

  4. Josh Knight Says:

Richard Dunne is a quality player; since he slimmed down he has started playing at a really high level. We need a non-injury prone centre back because I would be surprised if we got more then 10 games out of King next season and, although it hasn’t shown itself this season, Woodgate is prone to injury.

Luke Modric and Dos Santos are young, exciting players. If Ramos is to succeed in his intention; to transform Tottenham into a team who realistically can challenge for 1st, 2nd or 3rd spot, we cannot rely on players like Malbranque and Huddlestone. Yes, they are solid players and have shown signs of quality last season, but they are not of the level we need to accquire if we are to progress.

As for Coupet, he is a quality keeper and i agree strongly with teezageeza. Robinson is a great shot stopper; he is agile and athletic. However a good goalkeeper needs more attributes than this. Arguably, decision making and anticipation are more important. Robinson lacks the ability to make intelligent sporting decisions when under pressure. I love Robbo, but he has to go.
